The standards define the level of work that demonstrates achievement of the standards and enables teachers to know what kind of performance is adequate. They make it possible to isolate and identify the skills needed to use the knowledge to problem solve, reason, communicate and make connections with other information. The standards are broken into the categories of reading, mathematics, science, social sciences, fine arts, health education and physical education.
